I haven't entirely made up my mind about the Rev'd, after slightly less
than 500 pages. I wouldn't object to "kindly," but "trustworthy"? I
withhold judgement. For example, the occasional pompous dogmatic
religious statements he reports himself as having made in the past are
rather problematic--he seems to be in actuality something of a doubting
Thom., implying a certain hypocrisy in making such statements in his
professional life as survey chaplain. While dissembling a bit to ensure
success in one's professional life is an understandable peccadillo, it
nonetheless reflects poorly on one's trustworthiness. Also, as others
have pointed out, at times in his storytelling the Rev'd implies, without
coming right out and saying so, that he is making something up out of
whole cloth or at least filling in the holes.

Nevertheless the Rev'd's likable, the kind of gent you wouldn't mind
spending an evening downing a few with at the local.
