Not so much in defense of Pynchon, who doesn't need me to defend him, but
to demonstrate offense at the likes of you telling us all what Pynchon
"would be the first to agree with", or what would make him "blush" if only
he had you to point out his deficiencies. Taste is taste, my good man, but
please refrain from telling me what the author thinks or feels!

Obviously, the genius in choosing M&D as a topic has escaped you, poor boy.
As Wicks says:

"...what we were doing out in that Country together was brave,
scientifick beyond my understanding, and ultimately meaningless,..."

Just so! The perfect topic to catch the likes of you, yearning for
ammunition to use against your enemies real and imagined. But the
arbitrary, the meaningless, the "Despair at the Core of History"...What
better slate to allow you the freedom to fingerpaint your prejudices on?
And what better to use as a sign of the living than the arbitrary? Who or
what else has the power to make the determination?

>The Pynchon of _GR_ would have blushed to see himself resort to such tricks.
>No, what am I saying -- he would cried with shame. So yes -- cheap, and
>little, and tawdry.

Yes, get it all out, isn't it magnificent? Quite a self-portrait you've got
going. Don't be shy! I love these Pynchons you are describing!
