It's not merely being Jewish that counts but knowing enough Yiddish to
appreciate the distinction. My parents spoke Yiddish at home and among
friends. I studied Yiddish for a year or so. I'm sure that only the senior
executives would fit this profile. They don't do copy editing and, sad to
say, they don't usually read Pynchon's books, if they read at all.

I'm not doing that here. I am saying that his use of the word indicates a
lack of familiarity with spoken Yiddish. You think it's "George Washington,"
a character in a fantastic novel, not Pynchon, making the mistake. Maybe.
