I've just subscribed to list and read a week or so of comments and I think
I have almost got the deal here.
Mr Pynchon rooted this bloke Jules' wife and he's still very pissed off
after thirty years. And what makes him extra mad is that Mr Pynchon's
fiction purposefully and illegitimately fictionalises a group of California
pot smokers, a travesty which can only be conceived with allusions to
Hilter's final solution (or is it because the ever silent/silenced Chrissie
doesn't get a guersey in this novel compared to almost every other piece of
Mr Pynchon's fiction which apparently circles around her like Venus to the
sun?).
I'd like to admire the ability for people to make a career out of the
briefest and faintest brushes with fame. But I couldn't support someone
displaying blatent sexism (and I'm thinkng here of the laboured validation
of men's desires for girls - hey what about some recognition of who will
always hold the power in these relationships) and a willingness to
appropriate any person or event (and this ranges from the belittling of the
holocaust to that cute comment in which the reporter who 'know[s] how the
kids on the street talked' quickly translates into 'I lived it' - old man
journalist as street kid? mmm).
