Good anecdote about Grandma in Amsterdam. Don't know when she was there,
but the red-light district is getting little seedy, there were a couple of
places I didn't feel quite safe where large groups of junkies were hanging
out waiting to score when I was last in Amsterdam in late November '96. But
the window displays remain "quaint". I've got a post-card I got on that
trip that shows the typical picture window, lace curtains, lurid red light,
only instead of a woman there's a Santa Claus beckoning the passers-by.
The "little friend" you refer to is, of course, Simon Schama, a Yale
historian of some repute, and he's not a friend of mine (I'd love to talk
with him), although I do know someone who worked with him on his book,
"Citizens", about the French Revolution.
