£30,000 circa 1730 would be about £9,000,000 BPS or
$15,000,000 USD. By 1762, I suppose there would have
been some inflation. If we use this as a benchmark,
£300 per annum would have been about £90,000 or
$150,000.
Where did I get the figures for 1730? Off the coast of
Cornwall, there is a ship which has been down in the deep
for about 26o years. It is presently being raised. It is was believed
to be carrying about £30,000 worth of gold and silver when it
went down, hence my hearing about the translation of value
over the BBC.
Hope this will not prove a misleading benchmark,
Eric
