Jesuits

It slipped my mind earlier but the Jesuits have been
famous for NOT having a female contingent, unlike earler
religious orders such as the Franciscans and the Dominicans.
So up pop Las Viudas de Cristo--a stroke of Pynchonian
genius to get Brae and Ethelmer together. (don't nobody
start on intertextuallity now)

On the other hand, Jesuits are also known for not sticking
to standard garb. It's written into the by-laws as I recall.
Masters of disguise. Can blend in anywhere, visually and
culturally. Anyone you meet may be a Jesuit. Don't rule out
even fashion models or small town librarians. There are undoubtedly
Jesuits on this list.
