This talking-American-dog lacky says: The problem is, 'American'
is what much of the rest of the world calls us-- bloody Americans,
often as not.

In Central America they describe us as estadounidense. This
wouldn't have worked back when there was an Estados Unidos
de Centroamerica, however. Seems to me Mexico is officailly Estados
Unidos de Mexico, but I may be remembering wrong. What do THEY
call us? Gringo dogs no doubt.

India is a subcontinent as well as a country but it would be
confusing to call Pakistanis or Bangladeshis Indians. Probably
insulting too. (don't know the insulting part as a fact and
apologies if untrue)

In the end meaning always triumphs over logic or political
correctness. Don't tell a feminist that however.

No hard feelings, fellow Americans.
