...which makes an excuse for me to mention a very good book for 
collateral reading, _The Emperor's Last Island : A Journey to St. Helena_ 
by Julia Blackburn (Vintage, 1993).  Very good, unusual, meditative 
writing by womeone who has throughly steeped herself in the time and the 
place.  Amazon.com lists a number of other books by Blackburn, with some 
intriguing reviews.
