Stanley Kauffmann, in his Sunday NY Times review of a new biography of
Fritz Lang:
"If one had the gall to select a film director whose temper and style best
represent this century, it could well be Lang. In 'Gravity's Rainbow,'
Thomas Pynchon's profound phantasmagoria of our turbulences, some trenchant
specters from Lang's films streak across the novel's lowering sky. How
fitting they seem -- instances of the way that the claw of this particular
beast has scored this age."
Filter a lot of the adjectives, and there's a reasonable point there
somewhere.

embodies fervid incoherence...>
