Gorce is a surname. Pynchon writes Chateau Gorce ( I'm no wine specialist
and cannot certify this specific one did / does exist but the name sounds
perfectly probable) as we say Chateau Margaux or Chateau Haut Brion... The
wine in question is probably from the Bordeaux area, many Bordeaux wines go
by the name of Chateau so and so, these wines are supposed to be drunk "`
tempirature" (meaning the temperatrure of the room, hence also the other
word for it in French: "chambri", chambre = room) whereas Rhine wines are
supposed to be drunk at a cooler temperature..
By the way does anyone know how they managed to keep wines (and food )
chilly or cool at the time? Or is this another example of anachonism?
Joseph
