There was an essay that I read several years ago (can't seem to locate it
in my library or remember title or author) that examined the American Civil
War (or as we losers say "The War of Northern Aggression) as an extension
of the English Civil War. Roundhead/Puritan/Yankee vs.
Cavalier/Anglican/Confederate. I notice some strong parallels here between
the temperaments of M&D, the Royal society and it's use of/attitude towards
the "common" scientists, the proprietary drawing of artificial boundaries
(of all types) etc.
I will attempt to find my reference and follow-up with a more thought out
and presentable post.
