This also recalls the vehicle so much larger on the inside than it appears
from the outside. "Loaves and Fishes" is a direct reference to the
miraculous -- "no end of corners yet to be turn'd" -- which "Philosophy"
would deny, interesting in the context of Pynchon's "Age of Miracles" and
"Age of Reason" oppostion in his 1984 "Is It O.K. To Be A Luddite?" essay.
Maskelyne's "lucid and sincere" appearance as he reports this echoes
Dixon's when he relates the fantastic to Mason later on, in Chapter 75's
story of Terra Concava.
