138. "...I am told that of the Qualities observ'd in my comportment, those
of the classic Taurean prevail, -- Persistent, Phlegmatick, Provok'd only
with great difficulty, -- our Passion of Titanick Scope, our Fate, ever to
be prick'd at by small men in spangl'd Costumes."
Pynchon is a Taurus, too, and perhaps he's giving us his horo here. If this
is Pynchon's view of his own horoscope, besides the obvious reference to
picadors in a bullring (I will counter a suggestion made last fall on this
list, by one who knew Pynchon, that he was not "brave" or "adventurous" and
suggest that he's fought and won battles of the imagination and artistic
discipline few writers have sought and many more have avoided, but I'm not
aware that Pynchon's done any actual bullfighting), I wonder who the
"small men in spangl'd Costumes" might be...
Chances are high that I'm not the first to suggest this, but I'm sure
somebody will let me know if I'm wasting bandwidth: anybody who's
interested can cast a horoscope for TRP by pointing your web browser to
http://www.thenewage.com/root/ms/astro/ast_serv.html, plugging in his
birthday (May 8, 1937), and reading the detailed birth chart interpretation
that comes up, or do likewise at http://www.astroadvice.com/t_default.htm
(where you can also get an actual chart, with the planets and such laid out
on a wheel).
