I suspect that one of the earliest is Alexander the Great's campaign
which gave him control of Europe, North Africa and Asia. Not quite a
global war but then neither were the two great wars of this century.

Napoleon's battles for control of Europe, North Africa and Western
Asia probably puts him in almost the same league as Alexander.

Also, the Seven Years War for control of North America in the 1750s,
primarily between the Spanish, French and English was another carve-up
between the current great powers.

I guess there must be other such wars of empire which occupied the
world's major players e.g. over the carve up of South America
(England, Portugal and Spain?) or Africa.
