Doug:
I was responding to Vaska's comment, and meant my statement to be taken as
a hypothetical, "if women perceive the list environment as hostile for
gender reasons, then that's something to be addressed and discussed..."
What I personally want to do is to try to make my comments contribute to an
environment where everybody feels comfortable to express and debate ideas
about Pynchon's writings.

Doug:
I've felt intimidated in the same way, which is probably why I've limited
my posts in MDMD to commenting on observations made by others, adding
references to other works that might add depth, etc. I have yet to attempt
the sort of literary criticism posts that others grace us with.

Doug:
I do take that as a compliment and hope to be worthy of such. I've worked
hard ever since I got away from Louisiana and Texas as a teenager to grow
out of some of the attitudes I absorbed.
Thanks again for your thoughtful post,
Doug
