Generally attributed to Goebbels. Nicely updated in J-L Godard's _Contempt_
(restored edition coming soon to a rep cinema near you), when the film
producer blurts out, "when I hear the word 'culture', I reach for my
checkbook." Ol' Mittelmaessigkeit is full of such pithy allusions, like the
Adorno quote he botches at the end of his missive ...
Meg Larson writes:
>Then *use* the fucking gun, OK? Pull a Freddie Prinze, an Andrew Cunanan,
>or a Brian Keith, or any other stupid bastard who couldn't ride out the

>parties.
Especially when he shows off the aching tremolo in his boy treble voice, as
he belts out selections from Adorno's Tom Sawyer opera. A birthday party is
never so much fun as when Mittelstand shows up with his grabbags of
balloons in the shape of Jeff Stryker ("the Cary Grant of porno" -- John
Waters), enema kits, and obscene comic book versions of _Maldoror_.
Cheers,
Paul
