Bone's photo

Feature story in today's Toronto Globe and Mail about the James Bone photo
of TRP ... no indication if the article (by Bruce Culp) is a reprint, but
most of the details seem to have already been reported (rehashing the CNN
business, Holt's threat of litigation, etc.). The Globe may have tried to
get reprint rights -- one paragraph states "Mr. Bone's New York agents
refused to sell reprint rights on the photo. Rumour has it that an as-yet
undetermined news agency has bought up all rights." Instead, the Globe had
their cartoonist Anthony Jenkins draw up a caricature of the pic, with
TRP's face 'framed' as a photograph (the likeness makes him look like a
bulging-eyed El Greco portrait). Culp's attempt at background is good for a
giggle -- 'conspiracy theory' and 'counter-culture' sum up the thematic
concerns, and the fans -- oh, those quaint, obsessive Pynchon fans -- get
described thusly: "His mixed bag of fans include a goodly contingent of
dopers, academics, and anarchists. Pynchonites pine for the days of the
isolated commune, where children grew as strong and healthy as hemp."

Cheers,
Paul
