>And to get an account of this from geology that is quite readable
>even for the the layperson, check out John McPhee's volume on
>California geology. (Can't recall the title, though..)..
_Constructing California_, a really superb book, like many of McPhee's.
Last of a trilogy on geologists and geology, in the form of a geology
field-trip from the East Coast to the West. The first two are _Table of
Contents_ and _Rising From the Plain_.
A-and, while we're touting Other Good Things to Read, I'd say check out
the current issue of _The Nation_ (hell, subscribe to it, it's a national
treasure) for John Leonard's review of three biographies: Andre Malraux,
Samuel Beckett, and Georges Simenon. Leonard doesn't really do criticism
as such, he just writes what the book under review makes him feel like
writing. For the Malraux book, which he didn't like much, he just writes
a couple of pages summarizing Malraux's career and persona. It's a gas.
Cheers,
David
