I think David's post raises some very interesting points, and I see echos
in M&D.  In MDMD(5) (152-3) (sorry for cheating) Dixon sees the recreation
of the Black Hole of Calcutta at the Company Lodge: "If one did not wish
to suffer Horror directly," comments the Rev'd in his Day-Book, "one might
either transcend it spiritually, or eroticize it carnally. . . ."  So the
Dutch crowd themselves into a version of the B.H. of C. "in a serpent's
Nest of Limbs and Apertures and penises. . .moving towards some single
slow warm Explosion. . . ." 

Can't say I know yet what it all means.
