How about that Leni Pokler? I think that Leni is Slothrop,
with a child substituted for the phallus/purpose of technology.
Married to a technologist, she doesn't really understand science, but
still maps science onto her experiential, emotional life. Thats what
most of us do. I have to trust the explanations of mathematicians and
scientists (or not) if I want to deal with technology. Don't know
about other listers, but I can't follow the chaos math people except
when they use a metaphor (heard a meteorologist use the "birds
flapping changing the weather" illustration on the radio today).
And yet I believe many things that I haven't seen. I believe that men
have walked on the moon. A-& how many of can provide a truly
convincing argument that the Earth is round?
Paranoia should not be equated with conspiracy theories. If you
believe that the government/industry is up to dirty trick, it isn't
even paranoia if you mistakenly believe that they have tapped your
phone. It becomes paranoid when you believe that your family
(B.S., for instance) or many (seemingly) random acquaintances (too
many in GR to mention) are "in on it." One of the first things that
drew me to GR/TRP is what seems to me to be a personal understanding
of paranoia. Why didn't anyone ask the Chrissie/Jules if they thought
that the Pynch is or has ever been a genuine paranoid? Paranoia is
more than believing that everything is connected; it's very
self-centered, giving the paranoid a singularity in spite of the web
of connections, a bright spot (perhaps destined for extinction)
surrounded by Their grey.
Ramble on!
