I don't remember if someone else mentioned this during that exchange with
Steely o so long ago, but I was reading "The Quest for Pynchon" by Mathew
Winston and came upon a passage where Nathanial Hawthorne bemoans the fact
that "these Pyncheon jackanapes" have been harassing him about their
unsavory portrayal in "The House of the Seven Gables."

talk about a time bomb...
