I also read this in a class, about a dozen years ago....thought he was
trying kinda hard to be Henry Miller, an admirable goal that he didn't
quite reach.  But I liked it enough to keep it all these years, though I
haven't reread it....and I remember  the book going over well in the
Contemporary American Novels class.....don't even remember accusations
of being depressing, but again it was awhile back....
