The cover reminds me of the nature of the two heroes, esoteric and
exoteric, within and without. Mason, inwardly focused, bitter over never
becoming AR, and a member of the esoteric inner circle of the RS. Dixon,
exoteric, outwardly focused, no chance of ever being a member of the inner
circle, and not worried about it, in love with the exotic.

Between them the tale emerges, and the image I am struck by is that of the
Argand burner, patented in 1784 by Aime' Argand. The Argand burner
consisted of a cylindrical Wick housed between two concentric metal tubes.
It was, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica: "The first basic change
in lamps in thousands of years..." and, "..gave about ten times the light
of an earlier lamp of the same size."

Mason, Dixon and the Rev. any light?
