I received confirmation from Shaman Drum Books that the Pynchon festivities
are ON. The raffle will be held at 7:00 p.m. this coming Saturday.
In response to my attempts to persuade the bookstore to bend the rules and
allow us to enter the raffle if we bought books priced at or above M&D, I
got this unintentionally revealing reply:

We're thrilled you're coming! We're just confused about why you don't
want to help us sell more copies of Pynchon's new book. . . Publisher
(Holt) provided the framed jacket and bound galleys (rumour has it the
latter are already worth hundreds of dollars) to help sell copies of
Mason and Dixon. That's really what this promo is all about.

Oh well, at least they don't stand behind any literary pretenses.
Anyway, I see arriving at the store at about 6:15, hanging around for the
raffle, and then convening the GLPL at a nearby pub/coffeehouse/deli.
Suggestions on that? Peter Petto advises that the Del Rio was supposed to
be a Kerouac hangout. Can any A2 Pynheads suggest a spot?
