Because you'll double your pleasure. Actually I think Pynchon creates his
own audiences in this specific way: try reading GR and V and COL49, and then
for the next 20 years or so having your interests molded in some sense by
the experience of having read these three novels. Then along comes M&D and
magically you feel that you're on the same wavelength somehow. You get all
(well, most of) the joaks and allusions simply because these themes, and
this kind of humor have been part of your life for so long. That's why. -j
