     Today in history:
1989. Hundreds were killed by Chinese army troops when they stormed Beijing
to crush a student pro-democracy movement.
1997. Hong Kong democracy groups summoned thousands of protesters Wednesday
to honor students killed in China's 1989 military crackdown in Tiananmen
Square. Casting a shadow over Hong Kong's July 1 return to China, democrats
have rallied since Sunday against the massacre by
Chinese troops of unarmed young compatriots in Beijing eight years ago.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected at the principal event, an
annual candlelit vigil, arranged this year around a "Pillar of Shame"
statue. Activists placed newspaper ads urging supporters to turn out in
