Well, the final ascendence of Amper's *and* put an end to the great
 typography wars of the sixteenth century.  Gray's *and*, "Cooper's *and* and all of the 
other now-proscribed ands were driven underground, where, it is said, to this day they 
occasionally surface, inexplicably finding their way onto some official state document or 
international treaty, with no one quite sure how they got there . . .
