On the topic of people buying books just to wear them as intellectual
fashion accessories, may I remind "y'all" that anyone buying M&D for
whatever reason is giving just a little bit of money to my second favorite
author (yes, and lots of money to Henry Holt and his marketing machine),
which - in a perfect world - will keep Mr. P alive and well fed and writing
another book.

Let 'em buy and not read ... who cares! At least they're giving themselves
the chance to one day open it up (or, more likely, one of their kids will
pick it up, enticed by the bodice ripping and whatnot on the advertising
copy). That's how we get a new generation of readers ...

Plus, you can always rubbish these people at cocktail parties - jes' tell
'em to forget the new pynchon and rush out for the latest from Chavenet.
