As mentioned, Schuylkill is a river. Kill is a dutch (I believe) word
for river or creek, so in areas originally settled by the Dutch,
you'll find waterways ending in -kill. This was a source of
fascination to my eight year old mind when I first heard it, full of
ominous suggestion. 'Course, now I know it's just language....

The dutch word is Kil, and has several meanings, a river between two
high banks, or even harbor. I don't know the the world "schuyl" but is
probably from "schuilen" which is Dutch for to hide or shelter.
