3 Threads as a pre-Stout?

Am I right in thinking that 3 threads was a kind of 
pre-stout Stout, very fashionable in mid18th cen
GB? I seem to remember getting a history lesson
of some sort reading the back of a Guiness bottle
several years ago..."how Stout was born..."

Anyone out their sober enough to recall this
promo, circa 1990? Alternately, anyone out 
there 230-odd years old?
