hahahaha - rotflisdoibmamc! Yeah, I should have stated my mixed feelings
about the CNN piece. At once it was both exciting and sad. Exciting
because it added to the Pynchon mythos, revealed a little about a great
"mystery," but incredibly sad because it was invasive and exploitive, and
did erode a bit of that mythos. A good friend, also a Pynchon fan but not a
member of this list, was extremely disillusioned by the piece, and I had to
agree in part. We exist in an Age of TOO MUCH Information. Neil Postman
and Harlan Ellison had it right 20 years ago, TRP exposed the truth in
Vineland... and countless others I'm not citing right now echoed their
concerns for the time of NO SECRETS... heck, being an apocalyptic scholar of
sorts, I'd have to point out that this was all prophesized in the New
Testament and is one of the signs of the apocalypse (the little bit about
everything being known and shouted from the rooftops (satellite dishes
moounted on the roof?)! Scary... could all that stuff be true!!???
In any case, the CNN piece was a guilty pleasure, but I think it probably
did much harm to TRP the man, and IF I were him, I'd be planning a move into
further obscurity... if I didn't have a family to worry about...
