6.12. `all Philadelphia, from River to River' As I mentioned before, the
western limit of the city was then the Schuylkill River, so TRP lets us
know early that he has done his homework.
6.19 `the Northern Liberties, Spring Garden and Germantown'. These are three
neighborhoods of the city today, respectively located (relative to downtown) a
short walk northeast, a short walk north, and a long hike northwest. Off-hand,
I do not know if NL and SG were part of the city then. I'm certain G was not.
>8.28 `the crime they styl'd =93Anonymity=94' our narrator and his
9.27, actually. Preceding it would be:
9.26 `the worst of Dick Turpin'.
Dick Turpin, 1706-39, famed highwayman, hanged.
>10.23 `Seahorse' establishing a link to Mason & Dixon in the next chapter.
That was the ship the historical M&D took.
>17.12 `Laplace' b 1749 so aged 2 at the time of this scene!
aged 12, you mean. Note that he achieved a goodly measure of scientific fame
for his work in celestial mechanics by 1786, so one is apparently supposed to
conclude that the Rev^d is mildly fuzzy minded as he invents the conversation.
