Surely, nothin'. I'm having hard time remembering where I saw an exchange of
letters, purportedly belonging to the period in which Pynchon is narrating,
that did not have this as a convention. Letter writing has is own Protocol;
this by no means is inarguably used as a method to assure a character's
humbleness, whatever that is within the context of this novel.
