I guess it depends on how you define "depth". Working within the parameters
of an advertiser- or corporate-supported business model, some U.S. mass
media outlets sometimes give us surprising depth and detail and perspective
on some subjects -- not often, but every once in awhile, on selected
topics. I don't agree with the blanket statement that "The media is not
your friend, just your publicist"; sometimes that's true, sometimes not,
it's far more nuanced than that. For books, unfortunately there's nothing
on U.S. TV like France's "Apostrophe," which sells a lot of books and also
manages to discuss them, and the ideas they present, in some depth, and at
the same time claims a large and enthusiastic TV audience.
