It appears Pynchon called CNN in order to talk them out of identifying him
in the pictures and traded them the brief interview as a consideration. He
later then used the contact to deny the Wanda Tinasky hoax.

I think he knows exactly what he's doing and/or is being coached by gifted
professionals. He also sounds a lot healthier to me and I am, frankly, very
happy to see someone I admired so much when I knew him become more flexible
and outgoing. I hope he continues to unfold.
