Regarding the song's lyrics, we do know that Uncle Sam purchased parts of the
West (Louisiana, Alaska, Gadsen), conquered parts (Mexican war), and negotiated
parts (Oregon).  The natives were never consulted, nor were they so stupid as
to sell their land anyway.

"Nobody knows what happened?"  Well, maybe some folk singers and some pynchon-l
readers don't.
