They played on the same bill with Aum at Keystone Korner in San Francisco, a
notorious hangout of Hell's Angels and other verminous types. Aum was
managed for a while by Jim Brewster when I was living in the commune. I used
to have to go to Keystone on acid with him, tip-toeing by Hell's Angels in
full kit and kettle while trying not to look terrified.
Aum was so hot that we had to have the biggest goons in the commune stand in
front of the stage to throw screaming girls back into the audience when they
played places like Diablo Valley Community College. They did such a great
job at this that the band trusted them with their gasoline credit cards. It
is amazing what a gifted person can purchase with a gasoline credit card.
They had a contract with CBS Records that they just hated and wanted to get
out of, so I went to New York and saw Seymour Stein, who was then head of
Sire Records and had done two solo records of Wayne Ceballos, the leader. He
made a deal for them with Polydor, while I negotiated a release from CBS.
Aum was then playing Pepperland in Marin and some account executive from
Polydor came out to hear them and the goons threw him out.
Then Wayne and the drummer, Rico, had a falling out, mainly because Rico was
gorgeous and used to beat the drums bare chested as if performing some
forbidden sexual act, wheras Wayne was merely a great musician. Rico left.
The credit card use became even more creative and Wayne went into
bankruptcy. The last I heard, he was driving a soda truck.
