So June's _Natural History_ mag. has this fascinating article on Pat Conte
and his _Secret Museum of Mankind_, which consists primarily of his
collection of more than 10,000 78-rpm records from around the world. Many
are performances of folk music relatively "untainted" as it were, dating
from throughout the first half of the century. The article says he's
released a series of CDs with selections from his collection.
So yesterday I go to this new-and-used CD store at lunch--and there,
waiting for me, used, is _The Secret Museum of Mankind, Central Asia,
Ethnic Music Classics: 1925-48_ (Yazoo). Listen to the Kirghizia
selections a few times and you may think you see a certain Light out of
the corner of your eye--but if you turn to look it'll prob'ly be gone.
