Byrd's Expedition

Parallel to M&D's line b/w PA and MD is the boundary line drawn b/w the 
Carolinas and Virginia decades before by Mr Byrd and company.  There is 
an interesting piece in Richard Slotkin's _Regeneration Through Violence_ 
 a history of the myth of the west, written in '72 I think.  Byrd 
describes his expedition in much the same vein as Pynch does in his 
fictional M&D.  Byrd's account is called something like _Drawing the 
Line_(no aerosmith jokes please).  Byrd's expedition  is mentioned at 
least once in the book
