note that Pynchon's Hanged Man, the Revd Wicks Cherrycoke, appears on
the Card 1 of a 78 Card pack, err . . .

. . . or is that Card Zero, Werner?"

Since several people have thrown out tarot ideas, here's mine: If there
is anything more than coincidence to the 78 chapters corrosponding to the
78 tarot cards, I should think that some over-obsessesed tarot expert should
be able to draw a one-to-one corrospondance between the cards and the chapters.
It seems like each chapter really has one theme (1, the reverand speaks,
2, two letters of introduction, 3, the LED, 4, le'Grand attacks the Seahorse,
ect) or may, at least, be assigned a theme.

Now, I don't know anything at all about the tarot, nor do I really care to learn
much about it, but if someone who did know about it thought carefully enough
about the chapters, they might, over the course of the MDMD, come out with
some suggestions of what card belonged to each chapter, and why. By the end,
you would have a "full deck", from which you could (for instance) read
a fortune.

Now, I don't think TRP actually started with a deck and forced the chapter
structures to match the deck, but it would be a hoot if someone could
present an arguement that he did....

And there would be as much chance of being demostrably correct as there is
of being demonstrably correct w/r/t the identity of a fuzzy face on a video
screen.
