The Picture

It's really funny. After the CNN piece, Oscar (a friend and rabid Pynchon
fan... yes, RABID ;-) and I were discussing his "inevitable" loss of
privacy... and the fact that the floodgates have opened and will not be shut
until his "great secret" is exposed for the world to see. We obviously both
voted for Ole' RedCap, and still feel we're right... and now there's a
picture from a newspaper -- albeit a foreign one... well, what the hell are
all these ethical questions...? Really, I totally respect the man, and
would never stalk him on the street or in a murky sub-street level rock club
hiding behing the lone urinal waiting to snap THE picture of TRP's REAL
privacy! ;-) I mean, God... this is really getting out of hand. Sure, the
man prefers not to be photographed. Well, those of us that respect his
wishes would never photograph him, but does that mean we should refrain from
viewing his picture? Really?

Sure, there is a man we all love and respect at the end of this, but damnit
-- it's such a thrilling game! It's like Oedipa Mass running around trying
to figure out the T&T thingee, and all that Lot49 jazz!

I suspect somewhere TRP is getting some chuckle from the fact that his
POSSIBLE screen capture from CNN is on the web, but not really, since it's
all still a mystery! Of course, this feeling of gleeful satisfaction could
undoubtably be mixed with feelings of invasion... exploitation...loss... who
knows.

In the end, we have to decide for ourselves... should *I* look at the
picture? Hm... I can't be a hypocrite - I WANNA SEE THE BLOODY PICTURE -
from what i understand, it's blurry anyway, so the mystery persists... :-)

Anyway, Oscar * I anticipated that SOMEONE would put the CNN photos on the
web. I nearly did so, to assure it was done tastefully, but I was happy to
see it done with class! Kudos!

So, maybe we can have the London paper pic added to the Where's TRP page...
just a suggestion. That way, if you really wanna flirt with danger, you can
visit the page and see it... ;-)
