MD Line Story

Before I went looking for stones along the Mason Dixon Line, I stopped at
the Washington County Historical Society and Convention & Visitors Bureau
to ask for advice (and got PLENTY!) They hadn't heard of Ruggles book, but
were quite interested in anything arousing interest in things historical.
(I promised to bring them a copy on my next visit.)

After going to great effort to dig up everything they could find that might
help me,-- an old mimeographed list of Washington County landmarks with
directions circa 1967, a roladex card (they had two) with the name &
address of the best local historian/storyteller, a county map showing each
crownstone and milestone along its border, and more,-- one lady told me:
"Just the other day someone told me that Mason & Dixon never would have
made it as far as they did without the help of some Indians. Imagine that!
I've lived in this county for nearly eighty years, and I only found that
out a few weeks ago. There's a lot we don't know, and a lot that would
probably surprise us."

A true story. As usual TRP's books are the doorway to many adventures,
beyond the ones described.
