"Shoddy" is apt. Suggesting a word that was in the papers today (to
describe the media professionals who currently follow Jason Gould, the gay
son of Barbara Streisand and Elliot Gould, to talk pictures for the
tabloids), I'd call Bone "stalkerazzai" and leave "journalism" some shreds
of meaning to apply to the worthy work that does get done under that name:
the piece Pynchon wrote about Watts, for example, or John Hersey's
"Hiroshima", Seymour Hersh's expose of the My Lai massacre, this week's
investigations into the tobacco deal just hammered out behind closed doors,
what Benjamin Franklin did as a newspaperman a few decades before the
period of the novel we're all reading just now -- just to name a few
examples that immediately come to mind.
Just another SISSY journalist paging through the dictionary,
Doug
