At the time of the first U.S. manned flights in the early 60's, my
grandfather -- then nearly 80 years old, working class -- wondered "why
we're spending all this money up there in outer space when there are so
many problems to solve down here"; I suspect this sentiment was more common
that we might suspect, once past the media glitz ("sponsored by the
military-industrial complex" of course) of Walter Cronkite coverage of our
noble conquest of space during those years. Clear parallels, too, between
the engineering/scientific feat of rocketry and space exploration and what
Mason & Dixon do on behalf of the European conquest of "America".
