I know this is similar to Jody's comment, but I also see Hepsie as an
interface (how can I go wrong...) between her art and her job.  Her art
demands free expression, non-compensated and non-restricted, while
profitable trade requires that she get more than she gives.  Hepsie
deals out her truths to greatest possible gain, yet always receives less
than they are worth.  Hence, she is an imposter to both.  Like the
awning between light and dark, or storm and shelter, Hepsie holds a
false, or logically impossible, position between opposed states or
points.
