> 47.5 `Skanderoon' Where?
After failing to find anything in my atlas, I decided to look in my boss'
office, since he has a handful of very old maps framed on the walls.
(The same boss was very, very impressed that I am reading M&D, BTW. I
had no idea he'd read GR. Who knew....?)
This may or may not be the Skanderoon in question, but on an old map
drawn in fountain pen named:
Turkey in Asia
-or- Asia Minor & c.,
Agreeable to Modern History.
By H. Moll, Geographer
the Syrian port of 'Scanderoon Alexandret' is just east of the 36th
parallel, about 36.5 degrees latitude. The old map has the boundary of
Scanderoon in Syria, but the atlas places modern-day 'Iskenderun' in
Turkey. Moll lists all of his longitude lines in degrees 'East of
London' and has a scale drawn in 'English Miles'.
>From U. of Arizona's website:
"Herman Moll (d. 1732) was a Dutch cartographer who lived in London ca.
1680. He published numerous maps and atlases; some of his North American
maps were used to support British claims in boundary disputes with France
after the Spanish Succession, 1702-13."

Hope this is helpful.
