No it doesn't sound cynical at all, at least to me, Paul.  I wasn't being
 clear anyway when I wrote the sentence.  I was thinking about what
 mattered to me, in general, as I was writing that something should
 matter to all of us.  That's how the kids got into the sentence.  
But your way of putting  it makes more sense.
