Right on, Greg. This epigraph leads into some meditations on
the relation between a novel and history, and the idea that as soon as
*history* pretends to truth it ceases to be so, is positively pomo true.
Pynchon novels are also an instance of *doing* history (and philosophy).
How neat that the conjuror here lifts the curtain in a passage
talking about conjuring . . . .
