     You should check out: "Sculpting in Time: Reflections on the Cinema" 
     by A. Tarkovsky in which he puts it rather eloquently:
     
     "The image is not a certain meaning, expressed by the author, but an 
     entire world reflected as a drop of water."
     
     (Which at least proves that he can also be prententious when writing)
